Enjoy a lawn that lasts with Sir Walter Buffalo on the Central Coast
Introduced in 1997, Sir Walter Buffalo is an Australian-bred grass that’s now a nationwide favourite, with over 35 million square metres sold. It was bred to handle Australian conditions, from the cooler tablelands to the humid north.
Ours is grown at Peats Ridge, in the same Central Coast conditions it will be laid in. It’s cut when your order is ready to go, so it reaches your yard fresh, not after days on a truck.

What makes Sir Walter Buffalo
ideal for Central Coast Lawns
Superior Shade Tolerance
Sir Walter's broad leaves make good use of limited light, so it can grow in yards that get as little as 3 hours of direct sun a day. That makes it a solid choice for Central Coast backyards shaded by the house, fences or big trees, as well as open, sunny lawns.
Softer Texture for Comfort
Known for its soft texture, Sir Walter is an ideal choice for families on the Central Coast. Whether you’re walking barefoot or enjoying outdoor activities, this grass provides a comfortable surface while remaining gentle on skin.
Exceptional Drought Resistance
During the dry periods that affect the Central Coast, Sir Walter Buffalo’s deep root system retains moisture, meaning less frequent watering is needed. This makes it one of the most water-efficient turf varieties available in the region.
Self-Repairing Abilities
If your lawn experiences heavy foot traffic from kids or pets, Sir Walter Buffalo grass naturally repairs itself thanks to its creeping root system. It quickly fills in bare patches, ensuring your lawn stays lush and green.
Low Maintenance, High Performance
Sir Walter’s dense growth helps suppress weeds, reducing the need for constant maintenance. This makes it an easy-care turf option for Central Coast homeowners looking for a lawn that looks great year-round without demanding too much time.
Our lawn preparation
& installation process
Whether we lay it or you do, every Sir Walter lawn goes down the same way.
Here’s what happens from first call to first mow.
1. Free quote and measure
We come out, look at your yard, and measure it so you order the right amount, no more and no less. We’ll also check how much sun it gets and how it’s used, to make sure Sir Walter is the right fit. Laying it yourself? Send us your rough measurements, or use our measuring guide.
2. Prepare the ground
Clear out the old grass and weeds, loosen the top layer of soil, spread a layer of good turf underlay, then rake it level and firm it down. This is the step that decides whether a lawn thrives, so it’s worth doing properly. Supply and lay: we handle the preparation and levelling for you. Laying it yourself? Have the ground finished before delivery day. Our ground preparation guide walks through it.
3. Cut on the farm, within 12 hours of delivery
Your Sir Walter is cut and picked at our farm at Peats Ridge within 12 hours of it reaching your yard. Turf starts to heat up and break down once it’s rolled, so this short window is what keeps it green when it arrives.
4. Delivered to your yard, or collected from the farm
We bring it to your place and stack the rolls where you want them. If you’d rather, collect it from the farm yourself.
5. Lay it the same day
Fresh turf should go down the day it arrives, and within 24 hours at the outside. Lay the rolls in a staggered pattern like brickwork, butt the edges tight together, and firm them down so the roots make good contact with the soil. Supply and lay: our team lays it for you.
6. Water in and let it settle
Give the new lawn a deep soak as soon as it’s down. For the first week or two, water daily so the soil underneath stays moist, and twice a day in hot, windy weather. The lawn looks finished straight away, but keep heavy use off it for about two to three weeks while the roots knit in. We give you watering and care instructions with every job.

Sir Walter Buffalo
lawn care & ordering FAQs
Does Sir Walter grow well on the Central Coast?
Yes. Sir Walter is a warm-season grass, so it does its growing through the Coast’s warm, humid summers and slows down, rather than stopping, over our mild winters. Ours is grown at Peats Ridge in the same conditions it will be laid in. On sandy coastal soil, a good underlay at preparation and a wetting agent in spring and autumn help it hold moisture.
How much sun does Sir Walter Buffalo need?
Around 3 hours of direct sun a day is enough for Sir Walter to grow well, which is why it’s the usual pick for yards shaded by the house, fences or trees. It won’t cope with spots that get no direct sun at all, such as under a dense tree canopy. No turf grass will. Tell us where the shade falls in your yard and we’ll tell you straight whether it will work.
Is Sir Walter good for kids and dogs?
For most family backyards, yes. The soft leaf is comfortable underfoot, and its runners fill in worn patches on their own. If a dog runs the same track along the fence every day, or the yard doubles as a full-time cricket pitch, a harder-wearing grass may recover faster, so ask us first. More in our guide to the best turf for kids and dogs.
Will Sir Walter spread into my garden beds?
Not aggressively. Sir Walter spreads by runners that creep across the surface, not by underground runners, so it’s easy to see and trim where it meets a path or garden bed. A clean edge every few mows keeps it in check.
How often will I need to mow Sir Walter?
Less often than faster-growing lawns. Expect to mow roughly every week or two in the height of summer and far less through winter, when growth slows right down. Keep the blades sharp and never take off more than a third of the leaf in one mow.
Why does my Sir Walter lawn feel spongy underfoot?
That’s usually thatch, a layer of old runners and stems that builds up under the leaf over time. Buffalo lawns are prone to it, especially if they’re mown too high for too long. A light dethatch or lower mow in spring, while the lawn is growing strongly, clears it out. Don’t go so low that you strip the runners bare.
What weedkiller can I use on Sir Walter?
Only products labelled safe for buffalo lawns. Many common broadleaf weedkillers, including some weed-and-feed products, will damage or kill buffalo, so check the label every time. For a few weeds, pulling them by hand is often easier. A thick, well-fed Sir Walter lawn is your best defence, because it leaves weeds very little room to take hold.
