Key benefits of Kikuyu grass
for Central Coast lawns
Minimal Maintenance
Kikuyu Grass is ideal for the Central Coast’s coastal climate, where its resilience allows it to thrive with minimal care. It offers a low-maintenance solution for homeowners looking to enjoy a lush, green lawn without constant upkeep.
Self-Repairing Abilities
On the Central Coast, Kikuyu Grass’s fast-growing nature quickly repairs bare patches caused by high foot traffic or pets. It provides excellent ground coverage, perfect for busy households, while regular maintenance ensures it stays within desired areas.
Soil Adaptability
Kikuyu Grass excels in the sandy and sometimes poor-quality soils found in coastal areas. Its adaptability makes it a reliable choice for various soil types across the Central Coast, ensuring healthy growth even in challenging conditions.
Aesthetic Appeal and Soft Texture
Kikuyu Grass adds a vibrant green aesthetic to any Central Coast lawn, while its soft texture makes it comfortable for children and pets. Its ability to maintain its colour throughout warmer seasons is ideal for the region’s climate.
Drought Resistance
With periods of lower rainfall common on the Central Coast, Kikuyu Grass’s drought tolerance ensures that it remains green and healthy. It conserves water while maintaining its lush appearance, making it suitable for regions with water restrictions.
How we prepare & install your Kikuyu lawn
Whether we lay it or you do, here’s how a new Kikuyu lawn goes down, from first call to first mow.
1. Book a free quote and measure
We’ll come to your place to size up the job and give you a quote at no cost. On a large Kikuyu yard, getting the square metres right from the start stops you paying for rolls you won’t use, or running short halfway through. Doing it yourself? Ring through your measurements, or follow our step-by-step measuring guide.
2. Get the ground ready and edge the beds
Strip back any old lawn and weeds, dig over the surface soil, add a layer of quality underlay, and rake and firm it so it’s level. Because Kikuyu travels underground, this is also the moment to fit a sturdy edge along garden beds and paths. It’s far easier than pulling runners out of your plants later. Supply and lay: the preparation and levelling are part of the job. Doing it yourself? Get this finished before the turf is due.
3. Fresh from the paddock
We harvest your Kikuyu at Peats Ridge no more than 12 hours before it lands in your yard. Less time rolled up means healthier turf on arrival.
4.Drop-off or farm pickup
We deliver to your address and put the rolls where they’ll be easiest to lay. Got a trailer? Collect straight from the farm instead.
5.Roll it out on arrival day
Plan to lay your turf on the day it’s delivered, and no later than the next day. Offset each row so the joins don’t line up, push the ends snugly together, and press every roll down firmly onto the soil. Supply and lay: we lay it for you.
6. Soak it and give it time
Water the new lawn thoroughly the moment the last roll is down. Keep the soil beneath damp with a daily watering over the first week or two. Kikuyu gets its roots down fast in warm weather, but hold off on backyard cricket and dog zoomies for around two to three weeks. Every job comes with our watering and aftercare instructions.

Common questions about Kikuyu turf & care
Is Kikuyu grass good for the Central Coast?
Yes. Kikuyu is a warm-season grass that thrives in the Central Coast’s warm, humid summers, holds up well through our mild winters, and copes with the sandy soils common in coastal suburbs. Given full sun, it’s one of the toughest lawns you can put down on the Coast. Our Kikuyu turf is grown at Peats Ridge, so it’s already used to local conditions.
Is Kikuyu grass invasive?
It can be. Kikuyu spreads by runners above and below the ground, which is why it repairs itself so well, and also why it will push into garden beds and under fences if you let it. A solid garden edge, put in when the lawn is laid, plus regular edging through summer, keeps it where you want it. If you’ve got a lot of garden beds, Sir Walter is the easier lawn to contain.
Will Kikuyu grow in shade?
Not well. Kikuyu wants full sun for most of the day and thins out in shaded spots, such as under trees or along the south side of the house. For shaded areas, Sir Walter Buffalo handles as little as about 3 hours of direct sun. Tell us how your yard sits and we’ll tell you which lawn will actually hold up.
Is Kikuyu good for dogs?
Yes, it’s one of the most popular lawns for dog owners. Kikuyu recovers quickly from running, digging and wear, and patches tend to grow back faster than on slower-growing lawns. It’s a strong pick for yards where dogs and kids use the lawn hard every day. More in our guide to the best turf for kids and dogs.
How often should I water Kikuyu?
New Kikuyu needs daily watering for the first week or two while it roots. Once established, water deeply rather than often: as a rough guide, once or twice a week in hot, dry summer weather, less in autumn, and rarely in winter. Kikuyu may brown off in a long dry spell but recovers well once it gets water again.
Does Kikuyu go brown in winter?
It can lose some colour. Kikuyu slows down in the cooler months, and cold snaps or frost can brown the tips. On the Coast’s mild winters it usually holds its colour better than in colder areas, and it greens up again quickly in spring.
Is Kikuyu cheaper than Sir Walter?
Yes, Kikuyu is generally the cheaper of our two lawns per square metre, which makes a real difference across a big yard. Your price depends on how much you order and whether you want it delivered or laid, so ring 0409 912 824 with your square metres and we’ll give you a figure.
